Rabbi Zalman Abelsky
Rabbi Zalman Abelsky zt”l and his wife, Rebbetzin Leah Abelsky a”h, were among the pioneers who laid the foundation for the revival of Jewish life in Moldova after decades of oppression under the communist regime.
In 1990, at the request and blessing of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, they arrived in Moldova with deep dedication and a powerful sense of mission—to restore Jewish life and reignite the light of Judaism in a country that had endured many years of spiritual darkness. Upon their arrival, they began working tirelessly on behalf of the local Jewish community, which faced significant spiritual, social, and economic challenges.
Rabbi Abelsky served as the Chief Rabbi of Moldova and devoted his life to building institutions of Torah, prayer, and kindness. Under his leadership, synagogues, Jewish schools, kosher supervision, Torah classes, and extensive communal programs were established, giving Moldovan Jews the opportunity to reconnect with their identity and heritage.
At his side stood Rebbetzin Leah, who worked with warmth and devotion on behalf of women, families, and children, playing a central role in rebuilding Jewish family life in Moldova. Through her special character, she radiated kindness, care, and sensitivity to every individual.
Thanks to their tireless efforts, thousands of Jews were able to rediscover their Judaism, and many found renewed belonging, hope, and community.
The legacy of Rabbi Zalman and Leah Abelsky continues to live on today through the institutions of Chabad Moldova and the shluchim who carry on their path with dedication and love.
